Automattic halts Tumblr's migration to WordPress
Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and Tumblr, has hit pause on shifting Tumblr's backend to WordPress.
The big migration was supposed to add features like fediverse integration, but CEO Matt Mullenweg says they're changing course for now.
What will be the next move?
Instead of a huge behind-the-scenes overhaul that most users wouldn't notice, Automattic is putting energy into updates people have been asking for.
As Mullenweg put it, if fediverse features happen, they'll build them right into Tumblr's current setup—not through a complicated migration.
Tumblr isn't profitable yet
Tumblr isn't profitable yet and still leans on other Automattic products for support.
Still, Mullenweg sounds hopeful about giving Tumblr time to grow on its own.
Pausing the migration lets the team focus on improvements that matter more to users right now.
