India gets tsunami warning system for 25 Indian Ocean nations

Technology

India has enhanced its tsunami warning capabilities with a high-performance computing system from INCOIS, designed to make tsunami warnings much faster and more accurate—not just for India, but for 25 other countries along the Indian Ocean.
With AI and machine learning integrated, this system can crunch data at lightning speed to spot tsunamis early and help keep coastal communities safer.

How the system works

INCOIS pulls in real-time info from seismic sensors, tide gages, and deep-sea recorders to quickly detect undersea earthquakes that could trigger tsunamis.
It runs advanced models to predict how waves might hit the coast within minutes of a big quake (magnitude 6.5+), giving authorities more time to warn people.

Why it matters

Faster tsunami alerts mean more time for evacuations and smarter disaster response—potentially saving lives.
This upgrade is part of a bigger effort by INCOIS and UNESCO to make sure everyone living near the Indian Ocean is better prepared when nature throws a curveball.
