Public Citizen wants Sora 2 banned over deepfake fears
Public Citizen wants OpenAI to pull its Sora 2 AI video app, saying the company is showing "reckless disregard" for safety and putting democracy at risk.
The group worries Sora 2 could be used to make deepfakes and spread misinformation, making it harder for the public to know what is real.
Tech advocate J.B. Branch pointed out that the app can fuel political manipulation and even enable targeted harassment against women by slipping past content filters.
NewsGuard found that when tested, Sora 2 created realistic but false videos about things like election fraud 80% of the time.
Branch slams OpenAI for only addressing issues after they go public
Branch also criticized OpenAI for only reacting after problems go public—like when it paused disrespectful Martin Luther King Jr. videos following complaints.
He feels these issues should have been fixed before launch, not after backlash hit.
This isn't the first time OpenAI has faced criticism for launching products without fully addressing safety concerns up front.
