What's the story

Samsung has trademarked a new "SAMOLED" name in the Smartphone Displays category, according to a new patent registered by the company at the Korean Intellectual Property Office as well as the United States Patent and Trademark Office (via LetsGoDigital). The new display innovation is said to be an upgraded AMOLED panel and it is likely to debut on the upcoming Galaxy S11 series.

High refresh rate

SAMOLED could be an acronym for "Smooth AMOLED"?

The patented name suggests a new version of the AMOLED screen, which will replace the Dynamic AMOLED screen we saw on the Galaxy S10 series. However, we don't know what this additional 'S' stands for. Given the rumors that Galaxy S11 will sport a 120Hz screen, this new high refresh rate display (SAMOLED) could simply mean a "Smooth AMOLED" screen.

Like Note 10

Galaxy S11 will also feature a center-aligned display hole

On a related note, reputed tipster Ice Universe has claimed that the Galaxy S11 will feature a center-aligned punch-hole display - similar to the Galaxy Note 10 series. However, the hole will be smaller than what we saw on the Note 10 models. Further, going by a previous tip-off, the Galaxy S11 will come in three display sizes: 6.2- or 6.4-inch, 6.7-inch, and 6.9-inch.

Next-gen devices

Samsung S11 series will include three 5G handsets

Further, according to details shared by Evan Blass, the 6.2/6.4-inch and 6.7-inch S11 models will be offered in both 5G and LTE variants. However, the 6.9-inch S11 variant will only be offered with 5G support. This implies, Samsung is expected to launch five handsets in the S11 line-up and three of them will support the next-generation network.

From the grapevine

Everything else we know about the Galaxy S11 series

Notably, the S11 models are likely to feature a second-generation 108MP camera which will be a little different from the ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor that has debuted on Xiaomi's camera-centric Mi Note 10. The upcoming smartphones will also be powered by the recently announced Exynos 990 chipset which supports up to 108MP camera sensors and 120Hz 4K displays.
