Danish Kaneria: News

During his playing days, former Pakistani cricketer Danish Kaneria was known for his quirky action but what he is most known for now is his involvement in the 2009 spot-fixing scandal that ended his career. It is a shame, considering how the spinner with the most wickets in Tests for Pakistan is only behind three legendary fast bowlers in the all-time list. Kaneria began his first-class career in the 1998-99 season for the Habib Bank Limited cricket team. When he played his first Test match against England in 2000, he was only 19 years old. He made his ODI debut in 2001. Kaneria was not as successful in ODIs as he was in Tests. He only took 15 wickets in ODIs against the 261 scalps he had in Tests. As a leg-spinner, Kaneria took advantage of height to gain substantial bounce from the pitch which often surprised batsmen. Along with that, his ability to use googly as a surprise delivery rather than overusing them proved beneficial for him. Only the second Hindu to ever play for Pakistan, Kaneria's cricket career ended when the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) found him guilty of match-fixing while playing county cricket.
