Gauri Shinde is an Indian film director and screenwriter who predominantly works in the Hindi film industry. She was born on July 6, 1974, in Pune and completed her graduation from Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication. After her college life ended, Shinde started getting passionate about filmmaking and thought of taking it up as a career. Following this, she shifted to Mumbai and bagged an internship under documentary filmmaker Siddharth Kak. Soon after this, she started working with different advertising agencies like Lowe Lintas, IBW, and Bates Clarion, where R. Balki was the creative director. She worked in more than 100 short films and advertising films. One of her short films ‘Oh Man!’ was also selected for the Berlin Film Festival. In 2012, she made her Bollywood debut as a director in the Indian comedy-drama film ‘English Vinglish.’ She received the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director and the Laadli National Media Awards for Gender Sensitivity for the film. The film was also shortlisted as India’s official entry for the Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign language film. In 2016, she directed the coming-of-age drama film ‘Dear Zindagi.’ In 2007, she got married to R. Balki.
