Ahmed Patel is a former Indian politician and MP from the Congress party. He served as the political secretary to Sonia Gandhi who is the President of the Indian National Congress. Patel was also appointed as the parliamentary secretary to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Patel was born on August 21, 1949, in Bharuch. He was an eight-time parliamentarian from Gujarat; three times in Lok Sabha and five times in Rajya Sabha. He started his career in politics in 1976 by standing in the local body elections held in Bharuch. In 1977, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi chose Patel to contest for the post-emergency Lok Sabha elections from Bharuch. He became the youngest MP to win the polls. He also became the first Muslim leader to be elected to Lok Sabha from Gujarat. Patel won three consecutive Lok Sabha elections- 1977, 1980, and 1984. Patel served as a coordinator between the party and the government while the UPA was in power. He died on November 25, 2020, due to COVID-19.
