KK Shailaja: News

KK Shailaja is an Indian politician who serves as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Mattanur constituency in the 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly. She has formerly served as the Health Minister of Kerala and hails from the Kannur district. Shailaja is also serving as the Central Committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), as of 2021. She was born on November 20, 1956, in Kerala and completed her education at Pazhassi Raja N.S.S. College and Visvesvarayya College. After graduating, she worked as a high school physics teacher at Shivapuram High School. In 2004, she retired after serving for seven years and joined politics as a full-time career. Shailaja has been widely appreciated for her leadership during the Nipah and COVID-19 outbreaks. She had formed a team to enable faster diagnosis of the deadly viruses. She also received international recognition for tackling the COVID-19 pandemic in Kerala. In 2020, Shailaja was named as one of the world’s most influential women by Financial Times. The United Nations honored her in June 2020 for her efforts to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, Shailaja also received the Central European University Open Society Prize.
