Smita Patil, born on October 17, 1955, was an Indian film, television, and theater actress. One of the greatest film actresses, Patil made her film debut with Shyam Benegal's 'Charandas Chor' in 1975. In a career that spanned over just a decade, Patil has appeared in over 80 films in numerous languages and has won two National Film Awards and a Filmfare Award. She was the recipient of the Padma Shri in 1985. She is widely regarded as one of the finest stage and film actresses of her time. She was also one of the leading actresses in parallel cinema. Some of her notable roles were in 'Jait Re Jait' (Marathi), 'Aaj Ki Awaaz', Bhumika', 'Ardh Satya', 'Amrit', 'Manthan', 'Chakra', 'Namak Halaal', and 'Mirch Masala' among others. Patil was married to actor-turned-politician Raj Babbar. She died on December 13, 1986, at the age of 31, owing to childbirth complications following their son, actor Prateik Babbar's birth. Her last screen appearance was in 'Galiyon Ke Badshah', released posthumously in 1989.
