Sunil Dutt was an Indian film actor, producer, director, and politician born on June 6, 1926. He made his debut in the Hindi film industry in 1955 with ‘Railway Platform’. Dutt rose to popularity with the 1957 film ‘Mother India’, in which he co-starred with Nargis as her short-tempered son. He is regarded as one of the major stars of Hindi cinema in the late 1950s and 1960s and has starred in numerous successful films, including ‘Sadhna’, ‘Insan Jaag Utha’, ‘Sujata’, ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’, ‘Khandan’, and ‘Mera Saaya’, among others. In 1968, he was honored by the Government of India with a Padma Shri. In 1984, he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) party and was elected to the Lok Sabha for five terms from the Mumbai Northwest constituency. He served as the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Manmohan Singh government (2004–05) and was also a former Sheriff of Mumbai. Dutt married Nargis in 1958, and they had three children: Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, politician Priya Dutt, and Namrata Dutt. He died of a heart attack on May 25, 2005, at his residence in Bandra, Mumbai.
