Birender Singh Dhanoa: News

Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa, born on September 7, 1957, is a former Chief of Air Staff (CAS) of the Indian Air Force and a former chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC). An alumnus of Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun, and National Defence Academy, Pune, Dhanoa, was commissioned into the Indian Air Force's flying branch in 1978. He has held key posts and responsibilities in both Eastern, Western, and South Western Air Commands. He led a frontline ground attack fighter squadron as its Commanding Officer in the 1999 Kargil War and oversaw the 2019 Balakot airstrike on terrorist camps in Pakistan. Dhanoa has been bestowed with several gallantry honors such as the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and the Vayu Sena Medal (VSM). He became the Vice Chief of the Air Staff in 2015 and, in 2016, was appointed as the Chief of the Air Staff of India. Dhanoa retired after over 40 years of service in 2019.
