Hamid Ansari: News

Mohammad Hamid Ansari is a retired Indian diplomat, Indian National Congress (INC) politician, and former Vice-President of India. He did his Bachelor's and Master's in political science from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), and entered the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1961. He has served as an Ambassador to the UAE from 1976-79; High Commissioner to Australia between 1985-89; Ambassador to Afghanistan in 1989-90; Ambassador to Iran during 1990-92; and Ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 1995 to 1999. He was the Chief of Protocol for the Indian Government during 1980-85 and a Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1993-95. Ansari was also involved with academic institutions. He was a Visiting Professor at the Centre for West Asian and African Studies and Jawaharlal Nehru University (1999-2000) and Academy for Third World Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia (2003-05). He served as the Vice-Chancellor of his alma mater, AMU, from 2000 to 2002. Ansari was elected as the Vice-President of India and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for two terms from 2007 to 2017. Towards the end of his term, he made a controversial remark alleging that Muslims and other minorities feel a sense of unease in today’s India. He was honored with the Padma Shri in 1984.
