Ramesh Powar: News
With over 450 wickets in a first-class career spanning over 15 years, Ramesh Powar is regarded as one of the best to play in the Ranji Trophy. Indian cricket fans will never forget a stocky Powar bamboozling the batsmen with his off-spin. Born on May 20, 1978, in Mumbai, Powar made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the 1999-2000 season. He was a crucial cog in the Mumbai team that lifted the Ranji Trophy in the 2002-2003 season. Along with his wicket-taking abilities, his consistent contributions with the bat down the order made him a valuable asset for Mumbai in the 14 seasons he played for them. Powar made his international debut in an ODI against Pakistan in 2004. Albeit being handy with both bat and ball, Powar did not play for India until 2006. His Test debut came against Bangladesh in 2007. He last played for the national team in 2007 as his subpar fielding skills proved to be his Achilles heel. He called it quits from all forms of cricket after the 2015-2016 Ranji season. In 2021, he was appointed as the head coach of India’s women's cricket team.
