Alok Kumar Verma: News

Born on July 14, 1957, Alok Kumar Verma is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who has served as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation. He is the 1979 batch IPS officer belonging to the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories cadre. He has also served in various positions including as the Delhi Police Commissioner, Director General of Tihar Jail, Special Commissioner of Police for Crime, Vigilance and Intelligence, Joint Commissioner of the Crime Branch, and Joint Commissioner of Police, New Delhi. While he was serving as the CBI Director in 2018, Verma was accused of corruption and bribery by the then Special Director of CBI Rakesh Asthana. Following this, Verma also alleged Asthana of bribery and filed a case against him. Both Asthana and Verma were sent on leave, and a Supreme Court committee was formed to investigate the allegations against the two. Though Verma was reinstated as the Director of CBI later, he was asked to refrain from taking major decisions. He was later transferred as the Director-General of Fire Safety, Civil Defense, and Home Guards. In February 2020, CBI cleared Asthana from the charges of bribery in the case. In August 2021, the Ministry of Home Affairs recommended disciplinary action against Verma in the 2018 bribery case.
