Amarinder Singh, popularly known as Captain Amarinder Singh is the former Chief Minister of Punjab. He is also a military veteran and writer. He was born on March 11, 1942, to the ninth and last Maharaja of Princely State of Patiala Sir Yadavindra Singh of the Phulkian dynasty. He studied in The Doon School and was a childhood friend of former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi. After graduating from the prestigious National Defense Academy, he joined the Sikh regiment of the Indian Army from 1963 to 1966. He also participated in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1965. He began his political career in 1980 by entering Lok Sabha as a Congress MP from Patiala. He parted ways with Congress in 1984 as a result of Operation Blue Star. In 1984, he was inducted as a minister under the Shiromani Akali Dal government. In 1992, after splitting with Shiromani Akali Dal, he formed his own party Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthic) which merged with Congress in 1998. He was an MLA from the Patiala constituency. He served as a member of the Punjab legislative assembly for five terms. He was the President of the Punjab Congress from 1999-2002, 2010-2013, and 2015-2017. He served as the chief minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007 and from 2017 till September 2021. He resigned as the Chief Minister of Punjab on September 18, 2021. A profound writer, Singh has also authored five books on wars and Sikh history.
