What's the story

The Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators (COA) has received a proposal to hike the players' central contract fees by five times. Reportedly, COA head Vinod Rai is in favor of the proposal. If the proposal is passed, Grade A cricketers will receive an amount of Rs. 5 crore, as opposed to the current pay of Rs. 1 crore per annum.

How are cricketers paid by the BCCI?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has divided Indian cricket players into three classes - A, B and C. Their pay is decided on the basis of the grading system based on their performances. Grade A cricketers get a salary of Rs. 1 crore per year, Grade B are paid Rs. 50 lakh and Grade C are paid Rs. 25 lakh.

Apart from the yearly contracts, players are paid a match fee of Rs. 7 lakh per test, Rs. 4 lakh per ODI match and Rs. 2 lakh for a T20 international match. However, BCCI has proposed to double the test fees.

According to the proposal, Grade A players will be paid an annual amount of Rs. 5 crore, whereas the Grade B players would receive Rs. 2 crore per annum. Grade C players will receive Rs. 1 crore a year. Apart from the cricket players, the support staff will also be entitled to the pay hike.

A BCCI official has raised his concern with the proposal being passed to the COA. The official said, "The hike should trickle down to first-class/domestic cricket as well. And this is a decision that should be taken by the members at the Annual General Meeting."
