Dev Anand was an Indian film actor, producer, and director who worked in the Hindi film industry. In a career spanning over six decades, Dev was one of the most successful actors in the Indian film industry. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002. He is also the recipient of three Filmfare awards. In 1949, Dev had co-founded Navketan Films along with his elder brother Chetan Anand. He harbored the wish to become a performer after watching Ashok Kumar’s performance in films like ‘Kismet’ and ‘Achhut Kanya.’ In 1946, Dev was offered the lead role in ‘Hum Ek Hain.’ While shooting for the film, he befriended actor Guru Dutt. Dev got his first big break in the 1948 film ‘Ziddi,’ which was offered to him by legendary actor Ashok Kumar. Following this, he went on to act in more than 110 movies. Some of his popular movies include ‘Jaal,’ ‘Kala Pani,’ ‘Baazi,’ ‘Funtoosh,’ ‘Guide,’ among several others. In 1969, Dev was also a member of the jury at the 6th Moscow International Film Festival. He died on December 3, 2011, due to a cardiac arrest.
