Om Prakash Chautala is an Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) politician and five-time former Chief Minister of Haryana. He is the son of Chaudhary Devi Lal, who himself was a former CM of Haryana and founder of the INLD. Chautala joined politics in 1970 with his entry into the Haryana State Assembly on a Janata Dal ticket. He grew his popularity by running various political campaigns in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1987, Chautala became a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, serving in this capacity till 1990. He served three erratic terms as Chief Minister of Haryana during the 1989-91 period. In 1999, he was elected as the state’s CM for the fourth time, but called the next Assembly elections early in 2000. The INLD-BJP alliance was victorious in the 2000 elections, and Chautala became CM for the fifth time, serving a full five-year term till 2005. In 2013, Chautala, along with his son Ajay Singh Chautala, was found guilty in the teacher recruitment scam, and they were sentenced to 10 years in prison under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
