Ramdas Athawale: News
Ramdas Athawale is the political leader and President of the Republican Party of India (Athawale). He started out as a young Dalit activist in the 1970s with the Dalit Panther movement. He entered active politics through the Republican Party of India and was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 1990, completing his term in 1996. During this period, he served as the Minister for Transport, Social Welfare, and Employment Guarantee Scheme and Prohibition Propaganda in the state government. In 1999, Athawale founded the RPI (A), a breakaway faction of the erstwhile RPI. He was a three-time Lok Sabha Member of Parliament: from Mumbai North in 1998-99 and from Pandharpur during 1999-2004 and 2004-09. He became a member of the Rajya Sabha in 2014 from Maharashtra. After his party became an ally of the BJP, Athawale has been serving as the Union Minister of State (MoS) for Social Justice & Empowerment in the Narendra Modi government since 2016.
