Greg Chappell: News
A gifted cricketer who had the perseverance and willpower to use that talent to scale heights in cricket—that was Greg Chappell. Born in a family of cricketers, his elder and younger brothers played for Australia as well. He made his first-class debut for South Australia in the 1966-67 season. Impressive performances in the domestic circuit and for Australia A earned Chappell a spot in the Australian team in the 1970-71 Ashes series. On his debut, he scored a hundred. And, he scored a hundred in his last Test against Pakistan in 1984 as well. Chappell also holds the distinction of scoring a hundred in both innings of his first match as a captain. He was undoubtedly the best Australian batsman in the '70s. As a captain, he won 21 of the 48 Tests he led Australia. Although he couldn't lead Australia to a World Cup win, he holds the record for scoring the most runs by a captain in a tournament. After his retirement, Chappell was closely involved with Australian cricket. He was also appointed as the coach of India in 2005 and oversaw two tumultuous years that ended after the 2007 World Cup debacle.
