Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways), KPS Malhotra, clarified that the chaos started when the Prayagraj Express was waiting at the platform number 14. Meanwhile, passengers of delayed Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani trains thronged platforms 12, 13, and 14. Around 1,500 general tickets were issued, resulting in an uncontrollable mob.

Railway authorities deny stampede, initiate rescue operations

Despite reports of a stampede-like situation, Northern Railways' Chief Public Relations Officer denied any stampede took place, calling it a rumor. However, rescue operations were quickly launched with four fire tenders sent to the site. Injured were rushed to Lok Nayak Hospital for treatment. The Ministry of Railways earlier released a statement saying "the situation is under control," with both Delhi Police and Railway Protection Force present at the scene.

Notably, outgoing Delhi Chief Minister Atishi criticized both central and Uttar Pradesh governments for not taking adequate safety measures for Maha Kumbh pilgrims. She urged the Railway Department to expedite assistance for affected individuals. The incident highlights the challenges faced by railway authorities during large-scale events like Maha Kumbh, which has seen millions of devotees traveling across India.
