Amulya Patnaik: News
Amulya Patnaik is a former Indian IPS officer from the batch of 1985 of AGMUT cadre. He had formerly held the position of 21st Commissioner of Delhi Police from January 30, 2017, to February 29, 2020. Patnaik was succeeded by SN Srivastava. He graduated from Utkal University in 1979 and completed his masters from Delhi University in 1981. In his first posting as an IPS officer, Patnaik held the position of ACP Najafgarh in Delhi. From 1989-1993, he served as the SSP of Puducherry. Patnaik came under heavy criticism for his role during the riots that took place in North East Delhi in February 2020. In 2019, hundreds of Delhi Police personnel started their protest on the streets demanding justice and protection after some lawyers allegedly beat them up. Patnaik was criticized for being unable to control the clash between the police and lawyers. He was also condemned for his inability to control the 2020 Gargi college molestation, Jamia students’ clash with police, and the JNU scuffle. Patnaik was supposed to retire in January 2020 but he was given an extension due to CAA protests and Delhi legislative elections 2020.
