Arun Jaitley was one of the tallest leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court of India, and a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament. Jaitley did his BCom (Hons) from Sri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi, and LLB from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. He joined ABVP during his college days and was elected the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) President in 1974. He was under preventive detention during the Emergency (1975-77) years in Ambala Jail, Punjab, and later in Tihar Jail, Delhi. Jaitley started practicing law in 1977 and became the Additional Solicitor General of India in 1989. He was designated as Senior Advocate in 1990 by the Delhi High Court. A Member of Rajya Sabha from 2000 till his demise in 2019, Jaitley served as the Minister of State (MoS) for Information & Broadcasting and Disinvestment and Minister of Law and Justice during the Vajpayee government (1999-2004). Later, Jaitley was the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs in the first Modi government (2014-19) and oversaw the implementation of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), the Goods and Services Tax (GST), and the 2016 Demonetisation, among others. Jaitley passed away in 2019 due to health complications.
