He wanted to be a cricketer and had no formal training whatsoever, but none of that stopped Atif Aslam from being one of the most recognizable voices of the 21st century in the Indian subcontinent. With chart-toppers in both India and Pakistan, Aslam wrote a special page for himself in both countries’ music history. Born on March 12, 1983, in Wazirabad, Pakistan, Aslam did his schooling in Lahore and Rawalpindi. He did his bachelor’s in computer science from PICS, Lahore. It was only during his college days that he began to show interest in music. Aslam began his career by forming a band called ‘Jal’ in 2003 with Goher Mumtaz. The band did not last long as he quit the band in 2004. He released his first album ‘Jal Pari’ in 2004. It was a huge success and won the Lux Style Award in 2005 for Best Album. His Bollywood career began after the inclusion of his song ‘Woh Lamhe’ in Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Zeher’ in 2005. Another song of his from the album ‘Jal Pari’ was included in the 2005 film ‘Kalyug.’ The first time he recorded a song for a Bollywood film was in 2006 - ‘Tere Bin’ from ‘Bas Ek Pal.’ He has been nominated for the Filmfare Awards on five different occasions (2006, 2007, 2010, 2016, and 2017). After the decision of the All Indian Cine Workers Association to ban Pakistani artists in light of the Pulwama attacks in 2019, Aslam departed to Pakistan.
