Waheeda Rehman: News

A recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards in 1972 and 2011, respectively, Waheeda Rehman is an actress and dancer who predominantly works in the Hindi film industry. Even though Rehman wanted to become a doctor, she had to abandon this goal due to her family’s emotional and financial crisis. However, due to her dancing abilities, she got offers to work in movies. In 1955, the actress made her debut with the film, ‘Rojulu Maraayi’, in the Telugu film industry and later appeared ‘Jayasimha’ the same year. In the following year, she also made a debut in the Tamil industry. Her performances in these films caught the attention of Hindi filmmaker Guru Dutt who cast her in the film ‘C.I.D.’ (1956). In the following years, she appeared in some of the greatest movies made in the history of the Hindi film industry. From 1959 to 1964, the actress was the third-highest paid actress in the industry. Not only did Rehman work with the most established actors of that time, but she also received multiple accolades for her performance in the industry. Rehman was also awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994 and the IIFA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.
