Gajendra Singh Shekhawat is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician, Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Jodhpur constituency, and the current Minister of Jal Shakti, Government of India. He did his MA and MPhil from Jai Narain Vyas University in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. An ABVP student leader during university days, Shekhawat was elected the President of JNV University Students’ Union in 1992. He went on to hold key posts in various organizations affiliated with the Sangh Parivar and BJP, among them: National General Secretary of BJP Kisan Morcha, Co-convener of the Swadeshi Jagran Manch, and General Secretary of the Seema Jan Kalyan Samiti. Shekhawat won in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Jodhpur, and retained the seat in 2019, defeating Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s son, Vaibhav Gehlot, with a record margin. A known farmers’ leader in Rajasthan, Shekhawat was sworn in as Minister of State (MoS) for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in 2017. He was appointed the Minister for the newly-established Jal Shakti Ministry in 2019.
