Harish Rawat: News

Harish Singh Rawat is a political leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) and a former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. He has been an MP from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and has also served as a Union Minister. Rawat did his BA and LLB from Lucknow University, Uttar Pradesh. Rawat contested for the first time in the 1980 Lok Sabha elections from Almora constituency, where he defeated BJP’s Murli Manohar Joshi and entered the Parliament. He retained the seat in the 1984 and 1989 General Elections but lost consecutively from Almora in 1991, 1996, 1998, and 1999 against BJP candidates. Rawat returned to the Lok Sabha ten years later in 2009, winning from the Haridwar constituency. He served as Union Minister for Water Resources from 2012 to 2014 in the UPA-II government. Between 2014 and 2017, Rawat was the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand in what was a topsy-turvy period for him. In 2016, he had to resign as the CM due to rebellion by some Congress MLAs but resumed power after winning the floor test. In the 2017 Assembly elections, Rawat couldn’t lead the INC to victory, and the BJP took over the state.
