A graphical representation of Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik's international career will be a repetition of peaks and troughs. Purple patch, dip in form, and repeat—that will be an accurate description of this talented wicketkeeper batsman's career with the men in blue. The fact that his peak coincided with Mahendra Singh Dhoni's career did not help him either. It was in 2002 that Karthik made his first-class debut. His debut in ODIs and Tests came two years later, in 2004. The advent of Dhoni coupled with Karthik's flawed wicketkeeping did not help him to seal a spot in the team. Although he later made inroads into the team as a specialist batsman, he struggled with inconsistency with the bat. His best moment for India came in the 2007 away series in England, where he was the team's leading scorer in Tests. Karthik has continued to perform well in the domestic circuit, especially in the Indian Premier League (IPL). As of 2021, Karthik plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL; he had led the team from 2018 till 2020.
