Born on September 30, 1986, Martin James Guptill is New Zealand’s right-handed batsman and right-arm off-spin bowler, who plays as an opening batsman in limited-overs cricket matches. He is the cousin of cricketer Michael Guptill-Bunce. At the age of 13 years, Guptill lost three toes on his left foot following an accident. Guptill made his debut in international cricket in 2006 as part of the Under-19 squad against Sri Lanka. During his maiden One Day International (ODI) match against West Indies in January 2009, Guptill scored 122 (not out), thus becoming the first New Zealand player to score a century in the ODI debut match. He made his international Test debut in March 2009 against India. As of 2021, Guptill has played 335 matches and has scored 21 centuries and 71 half-centuries. In 2013, during New Zealand’s tour against England, Guptill became the first player to score back to back ODI centuries against England at Lord’s cricket ground. In the 2015 World Cup, he became the first player to score a century in the Knockout stage. In the November 2015 Day-Night Test match at Adelaide, he became the first cricketer to face a pink ball and to dismiss it. As of 2021, he holds the record of being the first player to score over 500 runs and over 600 runs in a T20 International match in a single venue. As of 2021, he holds the record for having the highest individual score as an opener who remained unbeaten throughout the innings of an ODI.
