Yashwant Sinha is a former civil servant, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) politician, and former Union Minister. He did his MA in Political Science from Patna University and taught the subject for two years. Singh joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1960, serving first in Bihar and subsequently in the Government of India and overseas, too. After 24 years of service, Sinha resigned from the IAS in 1984 and, inspired by the ideals of Jaya Prakash Narayan, joined the Janata Party. Sinha became a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament in 1988 and served as the Union Minister of Finance in the short-lived Chandra Shekhar Government during 1990-91. He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was elected in the 1998 Lok Sabha elections from the Hazaribagh constituency. He was again elected in the 1999 and 2009 elections, eventually giving way to his son, Jayant Sinha. Sinha served as the Minister of Finance (1998-2002) and External Affairs (2002-04) in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Over the years, he grew distant from BJP, and from 2014 onwards, he became a vocal critic of the Narendra Modi government. Sinha joined the Trinamool Congress in March 2021.
