Sanjay Raut is a senior Shiv Sena leader, Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, and Executive Editor of the party mouthpiece, ‘Saamana’, a Marathi language daily. He was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2004 from Maharashtra. He was re-elected for his second term in 2010 and for a third in 2016. During his time in the Rajya Sabha, Raut has served as a member in the Committee on Home Affairs; Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Civil Aviation; Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs, and Public Distribution; and Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Power. In 2019, he wrote ‘Thackeray’, a biopic on the life of Shiv Sena founder and life-long President, Bal Keshav Thackeray. After the latter passed away in 2012, Raut took over as the editor of his newspaper, ‘Saamana’. He is often in the news for his controversial and aggressive statements.
