Raj Thackeray is an Indian politician who is serving as the Chairperson of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), as of 2021. He was born on June 14, 1968, in Mumbai and completed his education at the University of Mumbai and Sir J.J Institute of Applied Art. He is the cousin brother of Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and the nephew of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray. After completing his studies, Thackeray worked as a cartoonist in the weekly magazine named ‘Marmik.’ He started his electoral journey by joining Shiv Sena and also launched the Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena. Thackeray played a crucial role during the campaigning for the 1990 Maharashtra Assembly elections. In 2006, he left Shiv Sena following a disagreement with his cousin and went on to form his own party named Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. His political outfit is mainly pro-Maratha and has been vocal about the rights of the people of Maharashtra. In 2008, he led a violent movement against the migrants from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in Maharashtra, following which he was arrested. Thackeray has also spoken against the Pakistani artistes working in India.
