Azam Khan is a senior Samajwadi Party (SP) politician and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Rampur constituency, Uttar Pradesh. Khan studied law from Aligarh Muslim University in the 1970s and started practicing as an advocate. He contested his first Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election in 1980 on a Janata Party (Secular) ticket and won from Rampur. He retained the seat in the next two state elections in 1985 and 1989 from Lok Dal and Janata Dal, respectively, and later successfully contested the 1991 Assembly elections, this time from the Janata Party. Khan joined the SP as a founding member in 1993 and again won from his stronghold in that year's state elections. He was a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from 1996 to 2002. During 2002-19, Khan made a return to the UP Assembly, completing nine terms from the Rampur (Assembly) constituency. He served in the UP government as a Cabinet minister in various portfolios such as Urban Development, Muslim Waqf Board, and Water Supplies, among others. Khan is often in the news for his controversial statements. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Rampur in the 2019 General Elections.
