Anil Deshmukh: News

Anil Vasantrao Deshmukh is a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) politician and a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the Katol constituency. He did his MSc in Agriculture from Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth in 1973. He contested as an independent candidate in 1995, winning that year's Maharashtra State Assembly elections from Katol. He served as a Minister of State (MoS) in the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance government in 1995. In 1999, Deshmukh joined the then newly formed NCP and again won from Katol in that year's elections. He retained the seat in 2004 and 2009 but lost in 2014 against his own nephew Ashish Deshmukh, a BJP candidate. However, Deshmukh returned to the State Assembly from the same constituency in the 2019 polls. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government of the Shiv Sena-NCP-INC trio provided Deshmukh with the opportunity to serve as the Minister of Home Affairs in 2019. In 2021, however, Deshmukh had to resign from the ministership as grave accusations of extortion and money laundering were leveled on him by the ex-Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh. The CBI and ED are probing the charges as of 2021.
