Rabri Devi: News
Rabri Devi is an Indian politician from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and a former Chief Minister of Bihar. She is the first and the only woman to have served as the Chief Minister of Bihar. Devi began her career with very little interest and no experience in politics. But due to her marriage to RJD’s founder and chief, Lalu Prasad Yadav, she was acquainted with the tribulations of the profession. When Yadav was arrested in the 1997 fodder scam case, he hurriedly assigned Devi to succeed him. She became the Chief Minister of Bihar in July 1997 and went on to retain the post for two consecutive terms until 2005. Devi was acknowledged for her surprising calmness during her first meetings in spite of the staggering change in her life. She, however, conceded defeat in the 2005 elections and became the Leader of Opposition in the State Legislative Assembly. She was elected to the State Assembly thrice from Raghopur (2000, 2005, and 2010). Later, in the 2014 General Elections, she contested from Saran but lost to BJP’s Rajiv Pratap Rudy.
