Lata Mangeshkar was a popular Indian playback singer and music director born on September 28, 1929. She received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989 and Bharat Ratna in 2001 from the Government of India. Mangeshkar has recorded songs for thousands of films and has sung in several Indian and foreign languages, including, Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, and Bengali. One of her first major hits was the song 'Aayega Aanewaala' from the 1949 movie 'Mahal'. 'Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya' from the 1960 movie 'Mughal-e-Azam', which was composed by Naushad and lip-synced by actress Madhubala, is one of her most famous songs. She is the recipient of three National Film Awards, 15 Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards, four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, and two Filmfare Special Awards, among many others. In 1974, she became the first Indian ever to perform at London's Royal Albert Hall. In 2001, Mangeshkar established the Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, which is managed by the Lata Mangeshkar Medical Foundation. She is the elder sister of popular singers Asha Bhonsle, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar, and Meena Khadikar. In January 2022, she contracted the novel coronavirus and passed away on February 6, 2022, following multi-organ failure due to post-COVID-19 complications.
