Avishka Fernando: News

A child prodigy who was picked for his first international match with no first-class or List A experience under his belt and a thunderous right-hander who can score runs at will at the top of the order, Avishka Fernando is considered to be one of those players who can carry Sri Lanka to the top of international cricket again. He was the most prolific batsman in school cricket in Sri Lanka. Hitting hundreds left and right, he became a national sensation when he scored more than 1,000 runs in the 2015 season. Great things were expected of him, and soon enough, Fernando began to represent Sri Lanka in different age groups. When the Australian U-19 visited Sri Lanka, he scored a century in his second youth ODI game, a quickfire 127 from 103 balls. In 2016, when the Sri Lanka U-19 team visited England, he scored two consecutive centuries in the three-match series. His impressive form in the U-19 group earned him a call up to the ODI team to face Australia in 2016. In 2019, he made his T20I debut against South Africa. In the 2021 ODI series against India, Khan was the top scorer.
