Navjot Singh Sidhu is an Indian cricketer-turned-politician who is also a popular television personality. Sidhu started his cricketing career with the Punjab state cricket team and made his national team debut in the 1983 Test against West Indies. Though his initial performances were dismal, Sidhu toiled and regained his place in the Indian team, making the 1987 World Cup a memorable affair for him. He retired from cricket in 1999 and later started featuring as a Commentator and Expert on various sports channels, demonstrating his witty articulation and charismatic on-air presence. He went on to work in television comedy shows such as ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ and ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’, among others. Sidhu joined politics in 2004, contesting the General Elections on a BJP ticket from Amritsar and winning from the constituency. He stayed with the BJP till 2016 and joined the Indian National Congress (INC) next year. Sidhu won from Amritsar East in the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections. Over the next few years, tensions with Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh increased, and Sidhu resigned from Cabinet. However, in July 2021, the party leadership appointed him as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.
