Articles about K. Chandrashekar Rao

Kalvakuntla Chandrashekhar Rao is the Founder-President of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and the Chief Minister of the Telangana. He was instrumental in the formation of the state of Telangana, with Hyderabad as capital, out of Andhra Pradesh. Rao did his Master's in Telugu Literature from Hyderabad’s Osmania University. Though he started as a Youth Congress member, he joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1983. He contested in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections that year from Siddipet but lost to INC’s Ananthula Madan Mohan. However, he won consecutively in the 1985, 1989, 1994, and 1999 Assembly polls. Rao held ministerial portfolios in the Andhra Government twice: Drought & Relief in 1987-88 and then Transport from 1996 to 1999. He became Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Assembly in 2000-01. In 2001, Rao raised the demand for a separate state of Telangana and formed the TRS, aiming to affect the state’s establishment. He served as a minister in the UPA-I Government as Minister for Labour and Employment during 2004-06. Telangana officially became a state in 2014 with Rao as its first Chief Minister. He retained power in the 2018 Assembly elections.
