Sharmila Tagore, also known as Begum Ayesha Sultana Khan, is a former Indian actress born on December 8, 1944. She made her acting debut at age 14 with Satyajit Ray's widely acclaimed Bengali drama 'The World of Apu' in 1959. She has worked with Ray on numerous films, including 'Devi' (1960), 'Nayak' (1966), 'Aranyer Din Ratri' (1970), and 'Seemabaddha' (1971). Tagore made her Hindi movie debut with Shakti Samanta's romantic drama 'Kashmir Ki Kali' in 1964. Some movies which helped Tagore establish herself as a leading actress in Bollywood include 'Waqt' (1965), 'Anupama' (1966), 'An Evening in Paris' (1967), 'Aamne Saamne' (1967), 'Daag' (1973), and 'Avishkaar' (1974), among others. She was the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) between 2004 and 2011. In 2013, the Indian Government honored Tagore with Padma Bhushan. She has won numerous accolades throughout her career, including two National Film Awards, a Filmfare Award, and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to the Indian cinema.
