Kamal Haasan is an Indian film actor, director, producer, dancer, screenwriter, lyricist, and playback singer who predominantly works in the Tamil film industry. Haasan has also worked in the Bengali, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam film industries. He has won several accolades including 19 Filmfare Awards and four National Film Awards. In 1984, he received the Kalaimamani Award, in 1990, he received the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan in 2014. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2016. In 1960, Haasan made his debut as a child actor in the Tamil film ‘Kalathur Kannamma,’ which made him win the President’s Gold Medal. As an adult, he made his acting debut with the 1975 film ‘Apoorva Raagangal.’ Following this, he went on to appear in films like ‘Moondram Pirai,’ ‘Nayakan,’ ‘Indian,’ ‘Hey Ram,’ ‘Virumaandi,’ and ‘Vishwaroopam,’ among many others. Haasan was appointed as the official Indian delegate to the 67th Cannes Film Festival in 2014. He has also written many of his films including ‘Raja Paarvai,’ ‘Aalavandhan,’ ‘Anbe Sivam,’ among others. In 2018, Haasan founded the centrist party Makkal Needhi Maiam.
