Mohammed Yusuf Khan, popularly known by his stage name Dilip Kumar, was an Indian actor and film producer who predominantly worked in the Hindi film industry. Considered as the ‘The First Khan’ of Bollywood, Kumar is often referred to as the ‘Tragedy King’ for his portrayal of serious characters. He is considered to be one of the most successful film stars in Bollywood and is known for bringing out the technique of method acting to cinema. In a career spanning over five decades, Kumar is the recipient of several accolades including a Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and Nishan-e-Imtiaz. He also holds the record of winning the maximum number of Filmfare Award for Best Actor. In 1944, he made his Hindi film debut with the Indian drama film ‘Jwar Bhata.’ His first box office success came with the 1947 film ‘Jugnu.’ Following this, Kumar went on to appear in several successful films like ‘Andaz,’ ‘Daag,’ ‘Devdas,’ ‘Naya Daur,’ ‘Madhumati,’ ‘Mughal-E-Azam,’ and ‘Aan,’ among several others. His last on-screen appearance came with the 1998 film ‘Qila.’ In 1966, he married actress Saira Banu. Kumar passed away in 2021 due to prolonged illness.
