Adam Gilchrist: News
Adam Gilchrist, or Gilly as he is fondly called, was an Australian wicketkeeper-batsman who revolutionized both roles when he was an integral part of the Australian juggernaut in the first decade of the 21st century. It did not matter whether he was opening the batting in the shorter format or played in the lower-middle order in Tests, Gilchrist played his role with an enviable tenacity. He began his international career by playing for the Australian ODI side against South Africa in 1996. In the 1997-98 season, he cemented his position as a wicketkeeper and an opening batsman in the Australian team. Success in ODIs led to Gilly being included in the Test team in 1999. A man of big moments, Gilchrist is one of the three players who won the ICC World Cup thrice - in 1999, 2003, and 2007. Known for his integrity as a player, Gilchrist decided to retire from international cricket in 2008. He continued playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) even after retirement, and in 2009, led the erstwhile team Deccan Chargers to their maiden IPL title. The first player to score 1,000 runs in IPL, Gilchrist announced his retirement from all forms of the game in 2013.
