Korean popular music, also known as K-Pop, is mainstream music that originated from South Korea. K-Pop has been influenced by various musical elements, genres, and styles like gospel, jazz, pop, experimental, hip hop, R&B, etc. The modern form of K-Pop culture of music emerged in the 1990s. The roots for K-Pop started from the 1950s and throughout the years it has been influenced by different pop groups and Western music. Contemporary K-Pop started in 1992 when the groups Seo Taji and Boys performed their music for the first time on TV. This also led to the formation of other popular pop groups in the Korean music industry. K-Pop became a power player and experienced significant growth in 2018, where it marked a 17.9 percent increase in revenue growth. According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s Global Music Report, K-Pop was ranked at number six among the top ten music markets around the world in 2019. H.OT. was the very first K-Pop group that made its debut in 1996 and it also started Korean pop culture. With the emergence of TVXQ and BoA in 2003, K-Pop earned more popularity.
