Mahela Jayawardene is a former Sri Lankan cricket player and cricket coach. As of 2021, he serves as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka National Sports Council and the coach for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. He is known for his batting skills and is considered one of the most successful captains in Sri Lanka. In a career span of about 18 years, he has played 149 Test matches and 448 ODIs. In 1995, Jayawardene made his debut for the Sinhalese Sports Club. In 1997, he made his debut in international cricket in a Test match against India where he scored 66 runs. His ODI debut came in 1998 against Zimbabwe. Jayawardene is the first player in Sri Lankan cricket history to score over 10,000 Test runs. He is the second player from Sri Lanka after Sanath Jayasuriya to score over 10,000 ODI runs. He played a crucial role in Sri Lanka's win in the ICC World T20 2014. Jayawardene has also played for Kings XI Punjab in 2010, Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011, and Delhi Daredevils in 2012. He bid farewell to Test cricket in 2014 and retired from ODIs in 2015.
